Yesterday I was at the Virginia Chandler Dykes luncheon representing for Texas Woman’s University and no one at my table had ever heard of Twitter. Twitter? What’s that? They exclaimed as if I was talking about a new bird feeder. “Twitter is micro-blogging and it’s awesome, it’s a great networking tool and a way for people with similar interests to interact with each other.”

I am an avid fan of Twitter and I love it even more now that I have my Tweets and my Facebook status synchronized. I highly recommend installing the app if you haven’t already.

I’ve been busy working on a redesign of this site since mostly I have just been getting content on the site for relative search hits. However, my new background for twitter has the color palette that I plan to use on this site eventually. To see the image in action click here.

You Need A Gravatar!

Do you read blogs? Do you leave comments? If so, you need a Gravatar. A Gravatar is a graphic image that shows up next to your comments on thousands of sites. All you have to do is leave a comment with the same email address and your Gravatar automatically shows up. Since the majority of social networking sites seem to use Gravatar as a way to show a face or picture with a comment, then it’s a no brainer. Go. Get. One!

In my words:

A great site to find quirky gifts and other items that you otherwise wouldn’t even know about, such as the “My bag makes me better than you ‘green’ shopping bags” and the “bacon flavored toothpicks”.

The site brings up selections in specific dollar amounts too, which is nice because I am living in the $0-$10 dollar range these days.

Why Twitter, StumbleUpon, Tumblr?

When I lost my job at Texas Instruments I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to do for work.

I didn’t really like what I was doing at Texas Instruments, but I had hopes that if I hung in there I would eventually become a manager or get to work on the Exchange Server team. That “dream” never became a reality. However, once I started reaching out to my networking communities on Twitter and Facebook I found a plethora of networking contacts and job opportunities in the most unlikely of places.

By being a part of a community you become friends with people who wouldn’t normally be part of your social circle. Why is this important? Because we often surround ourselves with people who are similar to us and even though this is nice and comfortable it can stunt your growth when it comes to learning something new.

So reach out and connect with people online who aren’t like you and who aren’t even in the same areas of expertise that you are in, you will probably learn something and you might even make a real life friend.

I’m always looking for free tools, tips and tutorials and yesterday I was directed to this site from a Tweet on Twitter posted by designer/blogger Rondostar.

Smashing Magazine is a tips and tricks gold mine for anyone who is into anything web related. I find it hard to believe that I’ve been a fanatical blogger/designer/social networking junkie and that I’ve never run across this site and so that is why I am sharing it with you.
