Time Magazine Article: Facebook is for Old Fogies

“4. Facebook isn’t just a social network; it’s a business network. And unlike, say, college students, we actually have jobs. What’s the point of networking with people who can’t hire you? Not that we’d want to work with anyone your age anyway. Given the recession–and the amount of time we spend on Facebook–a bunch of hungry, motivated young guns is the last thing we need around here.”

The 2009 Bloggies… Great Site. Unfortunate Design.

The bloggies are a site that gives awards to bloggers for various things like, “Best Asian Blog” and “Best Topical Blog”. Blogs are nominated and then the top 5 get voted on and then the winners are announced March 16, 2009.

Unfortunately, this year someone from The Bloggie Web Design staff thought it would be clever to make the site scroll horizontally instead of the standard vertical scrolling which we have all come to love and appreciate. I personally wouldn’t mind scrolling to the left if the overall site design was still beautifully done, but it isn’t.

I won’t spend a lot of time hating on the overall design, just check it out for yourself. http://2009.bloggies.com/

iPhone 3G to Buy or Not to Buy

I’m on the fence still when it comes to getting an iPhone. I’ve been using BlackBerries for the last 5 years and I’m just used to the way they work, but everyone that has an iPhone keeps telling me that it will change my life.

Buy Apple Stock

This news is about a month old, but I thought I would share it anyway just in case you didn’t see it…

“Apple today reported the best quarterly revenue and earning in its history, ”surpassing $10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time ever,” according to Steve Jobs. Announcing results for its fiscal 2009 first quarter, Apple posted record revenue of $10.17 billion and record net quarterly profit of $1.61 billion, or $1.78 per diluted share. During the quarter, Apple sold 2,524,000 Mac computers, a record 22,727,000 iPods, and 4,363,000 iPhones.”

With the current stock price of Apple sitting at nearly $100 a share I can’t afford to purchase any of it myself, but I just can’t imagine anything other than massive profits for this company. Not only does the iPhone seem to be the new standard of elite gadgetry, you cannot forget about the numerous applications that are being sold for this device. As the devices continue to sell like hot cakes I can only imagine that Apple will one day take over the world.

Why Twitter, StumbleUpon, Tumblr?

When I lost my job at Texas Instruments I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to do for work.
twitter

I didn’t really like what I was doing at Texas Instruments, but I had hopes that if I hung in there I would eventually become a manager or get to work on the Exchange Server team. That “dream” never became a reality. However, once I started reaching out to my networking communities on Twitter and Facebook I found a plethora of networking contacts and job opportunities in the most unlikely of places.

By being a part of a community you become friends with people who wouldn’t normally be part of your social circle. Why is this important? Because we often surround ourselves with people who are similar to us and even though this is nice and comfortable it can stunt your growth when it comes to learning something new.

So reach out and connect with people online who aren’t like you and who aren’t even in the same areas of expertise that you are in, you will probably learn something and you might even make a real life friend.
